Being energy proficient helps you become more energy efficient

No doubt about it … there’s a nip in the air. As winter bears down on us and cold becomes the norm, keep these recommendations in mind to improve energy efficiency and save money on your utility bill.

  • Daylight is good – Open blinds, curtains and drapes during the day to let the sunlight in to help warm your home.
  • Caulk is your friend – Caulk around doors and windows to prevent/minimize air leaks. It’ll help keep warm air in and cold air out. Add even more protection with weather stripping.
  • Being ready is key – Make sure your heating system is ready for the job ahead. Change the filter per the manufacturer’s recommendation. If it’s been a while, consider having a professional technician give your unit a tune-up.
  • Lower is better – Adjust your thermostat down two degrees. For maximum efficiency, consider getting a programmable thermostat.
  • Insulation is a helper – Check to see if you need additional insulation in the attic, along exterior and basement walls and/or in the crawl space.
