Enjoy your fireplace this winter, but do so safely

Fireplace safety is always a prominent topic this time of year. We still have a good bit of time to go before the cold weather is behind us and – if you haven’t already – you’ll be cranking up the fireplace to help fend off the chill. Before lighting the flames, check out these safety tips.

  • It’s a good idea to have your fireplace inspected and cleaned before the first use of the season.
  • Remember to open the damper.
  • Your fireplace should have a protective safety screen.
  • If your fireplace has glass doors, DO NOT touch the doors. They can get dangerously hot.
  • Keep children away when a fire is going.
  • Buy and install a carbon monoxide detector.
  • If installing gas logs for the first time, hire a professional to do the job.

A crackling fire on a cold winter day is one of life’s little pleasures. Just make sure you take proper safety precautions so you can enjoy it fully without any worries.
