At the forefront of research and technology for the benefit of the environment

As part of our environmental efforts across our generation fleet and throughout our business, our parent company, PPL, has set a goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and is targeting a 70% reduction from 2010 levels by 2035 and an 80% reduction by 2040.

Our pilot-scale carbon capture unit at the E.W. Brown generating station in Harrodsburg, Ky., has lowered capture costs by 40% and led to numerous patents and academic publications. The unit is the result of the carbon capture program we founded in 2006 at the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Research. Other project partners include the U.S. Department of Energy and the Electric Power Research Institute. Our E.W. Brown plant is one of just a few in the country with an active carbon capture unit.

The next phase of research is to study carbon capture with natural gas, demonstrating the technology at the company’s Cane Run generating station in Louisville, Ky.
